Rumors about a second next-gen Xbox console have been floating around for weeks now. It's believed to be cheaper and obviously less powerful than the Xbox Series X.

Gaming will be at 1440p or 1080p, and it is apparently called Lockhart, according to The Verge. But this just got some support, thanks to a post on Twitter, which includes references to the Lockhart console and multiple "Project Scarlett consoles."

If you have been following Xbox news, then you know Project Scarlett was the codename used to refer to the Xbox Series X before its official name was revealed. Rumors had suggested two next-gen consoles under the more elaborate Project Scarlett plans: Lockhart and Anaconda. The Xbox Series X mainboard has since been etched with an anaconda snake, but Microsoft had made no mention about Lockart.

On the leaked document, there's a profiling mode for Lockhart. According to The Verge (who has cited its sources), Lockhart is part of the Xbox Series X's developer kit. The developer kit, dubbed Dante, will give game devs the capability of enabling Lockhart mode that has a profile of the performance that Microsoft wants to hit with this second console. This reportedly includes around 4 teraflops of GPU performance, a slightly underclocked CPU speed, and a 7.5GB of usable RAM.

Lockhart mode will be used by developers to test their games against this performance profile and do validation checks. It is expected that the Lockhart console will offer 1440p or 1080p gaming, which are the most common resolutions offered in PC gaming monitors currently.

Of course, Microsoft has not acknowledged Lockhart or made any references about it except for the one found on the Xbox One operating system, together with references to Dante and Anaconda.

If Microsoft does not make any changes to the planned Xbox Series Z launch, it is believed the second next-gen console will make an appearance as well. The Verge says that Lockhard will likely be called Xbox Series S, which makes sense given the Windows maker has already trademarked the "Xbox Series" branding.

Microsoft has a $20 subscription offer for the Xbox One S All Digital Edition that includes an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The Lockhart console could also be offered similarly to attract people into giving in. and before the year ends, Microsoft is bundling its Project xCloud game streaming tech into Xbox Game Pass to give its subscription service a boost.
