Barack and Michelle Obama have continued to become popular icons in the United States. Though they are no longer the incumbent first couple, their time outside the White House seemingly brings them great wealth.

But, they have a "modest" net worth of $1.3 million when they became the first couple in 2008, according to Cheat Sheet.

Much of their wealth at that time came from their careers as lawyers. Alongside their legal services, there was, also, Barack's senatorial salary and Michelle's work at the University of Chicago hospitals.

While they did have enough for their family, reports noted that they became the United States President and First Lady "without extreme wealth." This is, reportedly, very different from the other former First Couples.

After their time inside the White House, though, Barack and Michelle Obama have seemingly increased their net worths. From $1.3 million in 2008, they have grown it to at least $40 million in 2018, according to Business Insider.

When Barack Obama won the presidency, he received $400,000 annually from 2008 to 2016 as his earnings. He, also, received about $15.6 million in royalties and advances from his books.

The publication said that these books include Of Thee I Sing: A Letter To My DaughtersThe Audacity of Hope, and Dreams From My Father. After his presidency, he now receives $200,000 annually for his pension.

Alongside the annual pension, Barack and Michelle Obama, also, received $60 million in advance to write their memoirs. In 2018, the former First Lady released hers titled, Becoming, and has since continued to become one of the best-selling books today. As of last year, the book had sold more than 10 million copies.

Following the success of Becoming, Michelle, then, added different items of merchandise related to the material. Reports said that these include mugs and candles that retails for $20 and $35, respectively.

The continued success of the former First Couple has become more apparent in recent months. The New York Post even reported that they are becoming a "billion-dollar" brand because of their numerous ventures.

Aside from publishing books, Barack and Michelle Obama, also, signed a $50 million deal with Netflix. They will, reportedly, produce various kinds of materials including scripted and unscripted titles, documentaries, and docu-series.

Several publications, then, pointed out that the former First Couple further increases their net worth with the help of their public speaking stints. While the former U.S. President earns millions in his speeches, the former First Lady receives up to $225,000 per speaking appearance.
