Apple's iOS 14 update brought a host of new functionalities to the iPhone, including the Sound Recognition feature, which alerts users to a variety of sounds.

Each passing day brings forth new discoveries of features brought by Apple's recent iOS 14 update. Among these new features is the Sound Recognition, which alerts iPhone users to a range of noises they may not have heard. This feature is particularly useful, not only to people who have hearing problems, but also to those with normal hearing function yet unable to hear the sound for one reason or another.

Apple said it decided to include this function in its iOS 14 update as part of the company's objective to make the iPhone a truly useful device not only in the field of communications but also in terms of accessibility. With the Sound Recognition feature, the deaf and hard of hearing become aware of situations like knocking on the door or some type of alarm or siren.

With the Sound Recognition on, your iPhone will start monitoring the surroundings for specific sounds. When it detects the sound it is monitoring, the device will alert you of the sound and also informs you what the sound was. While this feature is not among those that Apple fans go crazy about with the new iOS 14 update, this feature is certainly handy, particularly for those with hearing impediments.

The implementation of the Sound Recognition in Apple's iOS 14 update covers a lot of areas where alerts are useful. Some of the useful alerts include sirens, fire alarms, and smoke alarms, indicating emergency situations nearby. The feature can also detect sounds like a door knock, car horn, running water, doorbell, and a microwave done with its cooking time. The list of sounds the feature can detect also includes those of a dog, a cat, or a baby crying.

To activate or deactivate Apple's Sound Recognition feature in iPhone with iOS 14 update, open the Settings app, and tap Accessibility. Tap the Sound Recognition item and on the next screen, tap the toggle next to Sound Recognition.

You can also set which sounds to monitor and detect on your iPhone with iOS 14 update. To do this, open your Settings app and tap Accessibility, then tap Sound Recognition and activate using the toggle. At the bottom, tap Sounds and tap on the toggle next to the type of sound you want your device to detect. You can choose multiple sounds to detect or you can select only one type of sound that your device will monitor. To deactivate, simply tap the toggle next to the sound.

Once the Sound Recognition feature is active on iPhones with iOS 14 updates, notifications will show at the top of the screen, along with an alert sound and vibration. The notification also informs you of the type of sound the device monitored and detected. If you have an Apple Watch paired with your iPhone and the watch is set to display notifications from your handset, it will also vibrate and make a noise, and its screen will also show the alert notification. Bear in mind though that with Sound Recognition activated, the "Hey Siri" verbal prompt for Apple's digital assistant will not work.
