The Cleveland Cavaliers are still figuring out how to approach the 2020-21 NBA season with their current roster. Collin Sexton and Darius Garland were designated as the team’s starting guard combo but most know by now that this did not produce positive results.

The Cavs continue to grope for form, trying to figure out how to come out with a better performance this coming NBA season. In the eyes of some, starting Sexton may need a second look. Brian Windhorst of ESPN suggested on the Wine and Gold Talk Podcast, the 21-year-old guard could be of more help to Cleveland if he came off the bench.

“When I talk to people in the NBA about Collin Sexton, they think he’s a bench player. They think if he’s your first guard off the bench, you’ve got a really good team. But that’s the kind of role he should be in,” he said.

Cleveland has not been the same since the exit of Kyrie Irving in 2017. Despite his and LeBron James’ exit, the Cavs were confident they could start a new era with Kevin Love. Unfortunately, nothing has come close to that although there were positive signs for the Cavaliers last season.

At this point, the Cavs intent to somehow replicate the success of the Portland Trail Blazers has not worked. Cleveland tries to see if a Sexton and Darius Garland guard combo could work to their advantage.

Heading towards the 2020-21 NBA season, it remains to be seen if JB Bickerstaff will keep that tandem to anchor the club. So far, the Cavs have not been linked to any veteran playmakers although there will be a lot this coming free agency.

A look at Spotrac shows a lot of interesting veteran guards they can consider. That list includes former Cavs player Jordan Clarkson, Jeff Teague, DeMar DeRozan and Brandon Knight. These are plausible targets to consider if Cleveland wants some stability in the backcourt.

The Cavs don’t have to take dismantle their young backcourt entirely. They could add a veteran point or shooting guard to play alongside either Sexton or Garland to add some maturity in their game.

That move may not produce immediate results. However, adding some veterans to the backcourt mix could work to the Cavs advantage while Sexton and Garland continue to learn the ropes.
