Apple fans may be in for some disappointment as recent reports surface that Apple's popular MacBook Air may not have the mini LED technology before 2022.

Everyone is gearing up for the arrival of Apple machines and devices with mini LED technology. Unfortunately, a new report states that Apple's popular Macbook Air may not have mini-LED technology this year or at least until 2022. Rumors say that the only products that will get the technology in 2021 are the new iPad Pros and Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro.

According to a Digitimes report, Apple is considering the adoption of mini LED display technology for the new iPads and MacBook Pros this year. Quoting sources within the upstream supply chain, the same report mentioned that South Korea's Samsung Electronics will release its mini LED tablet, while Taiwanese multinational information technology firm Micro-Star International (MSI) will release a mini LED notebook. As regards Apple's MacBook Air, the report indicates it might not get the mini LED technology this year, though a mini LED version may come in 2022.

The DigiTimes report specifically mentioned the two new Apple iPad Pro models with mini LED technology that is coming in 2021. These are the 11-inch model and the 12.9-inch variant. It also revealed that a 16-inch MacBook Pro would also have the mini LED technology. There are also widespread rumors indicating that Apple might release a 14-inch MacBook Pro this year, though there is no mention of whether it will also have mini LED technology. Both MacBook models will have the new Apple Silicon chips. There is no mention in the report whether there is an upcoming MacBook Air with mini LED technology in 2021, though rumors are rife that the mini LED version might not come this year, or at least not until 2022.

If rumors are true, then it appears that Apple MacBooks' Pro lineup is among the first to benefit from mini LED technology, same with the iPad's Pro lineup. As for the MacBook Air, reports strongly indicate that it will not get the mini LED technology this year, but Apple may launch its mini LED version in 2022. Mini LED technology features more LED lights and improved control, making for a better color display and contrast. The technology is also power-efficient and allows for slimmer and lighter products.

Industry observers say that it makes a lot of sense for Apple not providing the MacBook Air with mini LED technology for this year. They say that providing the tech to Apple's premium lineup will help distinguish them from the regular MacBooks and iPad. For instance, the iPad Pro needs more 'Pro' features after the integration of the A14 chip to the iPad Air significantly bridged the gap in features. If the DigiTimes report is true, then Apple fans may have to wait until 2022 until Apple launches a MacBook Air with new mini LED technology.
