Shiloh Jolie, the daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, initiated the process of changing her surname on her own initiative, a new report claimed.

During the process, the 18-year-old allegedly hired her own attorney and submitted paperwork to remove Pitt from her surname, which would result in her legal name being Shiloh Jolie. This information was provided to PEOPLE by a source who is close to the situation.

"Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself," the insider added, pointing to Angelina’s assertions of an "abuse history" as part of the reason for the name change. "Shiloh made the decision to change her name," it went on.

Another insider told Entertainment Tonight on June 1 that "Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn’t know and can’t speak for it."

According to a story from TMZ on May 30, the second oldest daughter of the ex-couple submitted documents to the court to have the word "Pitt" removed from her last name, which would legally change her name to "Shiloh Jolie."

It was on May 27, Shiloh's 18th birthday, that she submitted the legal documentation that PEOPLE was able to get in order to remove the name Pitt from her last name.

Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Knox, 15, and Vivienne, 15, are the other five children that Pitt, 60, and Jolie, 48, have together. Shiloh is the only kid that they have together.

Additionally, it would appear that two of Shiloh's siblings have deleted the surname Pitt from their family names. In the playbill for the Broadway production of “The Outsiders,” which Angelina is producing, Vivienne is credited as "Vivienne Jolie."

Angelina is the producer of the musical. In the meantime, Zahara joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Spelman College in November, using the name Zahara Marley Jolie to introduce herself to the other members of the organization.

The divorce petition that Angelina sent to Brad in 2016 included a request for sole physical custody of the couple's six children.

An insider told People in August 2022 that their lack of connection has been "a sad situation for years," referring to Pitt's ongoing custody fight with Jolie. The struggle is said to have been going on for years. The informant continued by saying, "There have been many instances in which he did not see the children at all," referring to the actor who played a role in “Bullet Train.”

Angelina has made allegations that Brad was abusive to both her and the children, which the “Troy” star’s attorneys have referred to as "misleading" and a "distraction." These allegations have been made alongside the exes' legal battles over custody of their children and their winery Chateau Miraval.

In a recent filing in their dispute over the winery, a former security guard for the couple, who is still employed by Brad, said in legal documents that Angelina reportedly "encouraged" the children to "avoid spending time" with Brad during visits. This information was included in the case.

Paul Murphy, her attorney, issued a statement in reaction to the allegations, saying, "All Angelina has ever wanted was separation and health, with positive relationships between all members of their family, including Mr. Pitt."

"It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children," Angelina said at the time, stressing that "there's a lot" she couldn't say about the current divorce settlement. "It took a lot for me to be in that position,” the “Maleficent” actress went on.
