It's not easy to have Africa convinced that a country has its best interests for them. In the case of China, however, there is no problem in pleasing Africa. African leaders-during the China-hosted summit of nations-sang praises for Chinese president Xi Jinping as they gathered and closed deals in what has become the largest-ever convention of African leaders.
Those countries-most of which Xi Jinping invited while visiting during his whirlwind tour in the African peninsula-took up the Chinese president's invitation. According to Independent UK, China gave these African nations plenty of matter to toast to, as they are to take home $60 billion in infrastructure investments, among other things. These are to be distributed in the next three years.
China has previously invested $60 billion last 2015. This makes it a total of $120 billion investments in China, both in the past and the present. China's aid is an investment in creating a bridge to link the African continent to the Belt and Road Initiative, which Chinese president Xi Jinping is selling to the African people hugely.
If there are any country poised to take advantage of China's friendly stance, it would be Zimbabwe.
According to VOA Zimbabwe, in an interview, President Emmerson Mnangagwa cleared up their position. According to him, the country realizes that there is a transition happening. The African nation realizes that China is spearheading what can be called a 'New World Order' and that Zimbabwe is riding at the front of this delegation in understanding what this means for the rest of Africa.
The interview took place before the opening of this year's annual 2018 summit of the China-Africa Cooperation. He further stressed the position of Zimbabwe, saying that they are part of what has become the 'New World Order,' and called any other country still oblivious to it 'blind.'
Some countries, however, are opposed to what they perceive as neo-colonialism, as Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad put it. He canceled a deal with China worth $20 billion for a railway project; all because he thought that China was trying to be in places they shouldn't.
This wasn't the tone that Xi Jinping welcomed the African leaders with, however. Speaking at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, the Chinese president included that China isn't a country that's comfortable interfering with other countries' internal affairs. He assured the African leaders that the investments are offered without 'political strings attached.'
