Fans of Outlander may have reasons to rejoice because production is in full swing for season 5. However, a disappointing turn of events could be brewing on the show as Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) may yet again separate because of a challenging circumstance.
Outlander season 5 may bring another test for Jamie and Claire's relationship. Despite their proven love for each other, Jamie could be forced to leave Claire behind or make a decision that could greatly impact his family.
Towards the end of Outlander season 4, Governor Tryon (played by Tim Downie) gave his orders for Jamie to track down the rebellious Redcoats. In exchange, he and his family could live peacefully and build Fraser's Ridge in North America.
But according to Daily Express, this order may find Jamie away from his family for quite a long time because he has a duty to fulfill. Worse, this order brings an added dilemma because one of the members of the rebel group is Murtagh Fraser (played by Duncan Lacroix), Jamie's long-time friend and godfather.
According to Outlander season 5 executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, Jamie will face tremendous difficulties because he has to choose between his obligation and his relationship. One mistake or one bad decision could affect the family he would temporarily leave behind.
"Let's just say Jamie is clearly between a rock and a hard place, the rock being his signed oath to the Crown, to Governor Tryon, for the land that they live on, and his loyalty and his love for Murtagh," Roberts said via Parade. Regardless, however, Outlander season 5 will be another shining moment for Heughan and Balfe as they portray their characters.
Balfe also opened up to Parade about playing Claire and stated that the stories of her character continue to challenge her season after season. She believes that Claire has evolved over the years as someone who represents compassion, empathy, and love.
Heughan, on the other hand, said that he loves playing a character who is quite honorable and has a great passion for Scotland, the background of this beautiful love story. The actor said that the Outlander books, written by Diana Gabaldon, has truly been a great resource for how he lets his character transform.
Meanwhile, Outlander season 5 will likely also feature the dynamics of how Jamie and Claire are as godparents to Brianna's (played by Sophie Skelton) baby. The show is expected to return on the small screen by the fall season.
