If at some point the Xbox Project Scarlett will seem to have two consoles, one rumored to be called the Lockhart, which is the cheaper entry-level console and the Anaconda, which is the powerful one, now Phil Spencer confirms in an interview for Business Insider that the rumors about Lockhart and Anaconda are not true and that the Xbox Project Scarlett is a single console that will arrive in 2020.
Microsoft's 2019 E3 conference was highlighted by many things, including the official presentation of Project Scarlett, the next generation of Xbox that will bring great advances in terms of speed and graphics power. Back then, the Xbox team also announced that they were working on several consoles that would see the light in the future.
These brought in rumors that the Project Scarlett will have two platforms that would be called Lockhart and Anaconda, two consoles that would appear in the roadmap planned by the company for 2020, but that has now vanished. Xbox head Phil Spencer specified that they were completely focused on Project Scarlett's powerful console
After talking to its users, Microsoft team and others related to the industry, Xbox team agree that, if you develop two systems with different potential, the developers in charge of making the game consoles will have to work first on the less powerful version and then moved to the most powerful platform. This will then take time, and in order to cope up with the 2020 launch, Xbox decided to just focus on the more powerful one rather than creating a cheap entry level console.
The Project Scarlett console will use as its graphics chip, a variant of the AMD Zen 2. It will also have a GDDR6 processor and a new generation of SSD memory. The objective is to offer an 8K resolution in their titles and have the capacity to reach 120 fps, images per second as well as raytracing in real time. Xbox announced that it would be 4x more powerful than the Xbox One and that gathered a huge applaud in the conference.
Beyond these technical details and the fact that it will be retro-compatible, the appearance and official name of the system, as well as its command is still unknown.
In the same interview, Spencer was asked if he thinks Project Scarlett is going to be the last console to be built by the Xbox division, in which he answered that he is really not sure. He added that he has been in the industry long enough to hear companies say this is going to be the last generation, but didn't really happen, and as long as people are still buying the devices, which in the case of Xbox, the sales are still increasing, there will be room for improvements and probably new consoles.
For some time, Microsoft has taken a turn in its strategy and has decided to focus on subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass, which allows access to a catalog of games in motion that is modified every month. They also offer Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate under the same subscription strategy.
