The Detroit Pistons made some news during the opening of the NBA free agency. The move appears to fill one of the biggest question marks in their lineup. The Pistons have recently agreed to a free-agent deal with the former NBA MVP Derrick Rose. A source confirmed on Sunday night that the deal is a two-year contract worth $15 million.
The news was first reported by the Athletic last Saturday that the Detroit Pistons is one of the favorites to include Rose in free agency. Derrick Rose had a burgeoning career in the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the 2018-2019 season of the NBA Ross has an average of 18 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game.
He also shoots a 37 percent career best from the 3-point line. Derrick Rose previously held a minimum contract with the Timberwolves worth $2.4 million and is an interesting alternative for the Detroit Pistons at point guard. The Detroit Pistons are beyond the salary cap and do not have that much of financial flexibility in the NBA free agency.
The team began free agency with $9.3 million in the mid-level exception as well as in the bi-annual exception of around $3.6 million. Each of this can be divided among several players but not aggregated for a single player. ESPN reported that the Pistons will utilize the mid-level exception to get Derrick Rose and will have a spare of around $2 million.
Detroit will use part of the $9.3M midlevel exception to sign Derrick Rose. The Pistons still have $2M remaining of the exception and now have a projected $125M in salary with 12 players under contract. Detroit also has the $3.6M biannual exception. https://t.co/yrKY4Dbbsv — Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) June 30, 2019
Derrick Rose is a great fit for the Pistons' roster, which, at the moment have only one point guard under contract after Jose Calderon and Ish Smith became free agents following this season. Although the team chose Jordan Bone in the round two of the NBA draft, he will most likely be on a two-way deal with the G-League.
For the upcoming NBA season, the Detroit Pistons will return its current starter, Reggie Jackson. It is still unknown if Ish Smith is going to stick with the team given that he is at present a free agent. Derrick Rose signing a deal with the Detroit Pistons could be an indication that the team is currently moving on from Ish Smith. The current point guard shooter has an average of 5.8 assists and 14.4 points for every 36 minutes during the last NBA season. Ish Smith could potentially be included in the short list of names that the Chicago Bulls are currently considering at the point guard slot.
