In May, reports claiming that Microsoft's Windows 10 update caused a handful of issues with it's Surface Book 2 came into light. Recently, the tech giant confirms that it is indeed a legitimate issue and added that the company is already working on a patch in order to resolve the issue.
According to Microsoft, the Windows 10 update released in May caused a major issue with regards to graphics card incompatibility. The tech giant said that the update caused some issues with Nvidia graphics cards, along with a number of discrete GPUs. Microsoft said that the update appeared to terminate some graphics card drivers automatically. In some cases, the drivers will not load up at all.
In a statement posted on its Windows 10 support page, Microsoft noted, "Microsoft has identified a compatibility issue on some Surface Book 2 devices configured with Nvidia discrete graphics processing unite. After updating to Windows 10, version 1903 (May 2019 Feature Update), some apps or games that need to perform graphics-intensive operations may close or fail to open."
Microsoft added that in order to prevent this issues from happening, the company decided to put all compatibility issues on hold, especially for Nvdia discrete GPUs. For those users who have already downloaded and installed the culprit update, Microsoft recommends performing a full restart to the device and scan for any hardware updates using the Devices Manager. While this is not a fool-proof workaround, Microsoft said that it could mitigate the issue from recurring.
The tech giant said that it is already working on a remedy in order to patch the problem. However, the company did not provide a timeline as to when the update will be released.
The Surface Book 2 is one of Microsoft's flagship devices, and to have it fail like this is an embarrassment to the tech giant. As a flagship device, Microsoft is expected to have all the bugs sorted out for it, or at least have a team on standby that is ready to patch everything out in case a new problem emerges.
Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system caters to a lot of platforms, which is why it is hard to perfect rollouts and updates. Issues like this one are more likely to come out at one point in time when working on a multiple platform update. While this issue appears to be restricted to Surface Book 2 devices only, the community is closely monitoring other Windows 10 devices and platforms as well.
