The last Champions League final was a great display of talent for English clubs Tottenham, and the eventual champion Liverpool. Opening up for the first time after that heartbreaking defeat, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said that the loss gave him one of the worst feelings in his entire career. However, he did offer a tinge of positivity claiming that he is ready to move on from that defeat and work hard again in order to win a title finally.
Tottenham Hotspur had one of the best Champions League run in recent memory. Considering that this is the club's debut into the European Cup final makes it even more historic. Tottenham faced some of the most formidable clubs in Europe, only to be shied away from by fellow English club Liverpool on a 2-0 devastating defeat.
Tottenham eliminated cup favorite Manchester City in the knock-out stages. At one point, the club even faced an almost insurmountable 3-0 aggregate against Dutch club Ajax in the semi-finals. Nevertheless, the club persevered and eventually came on top. But their journey to immortality was cut short almost immediately after Mohamed Salah scored an early penalty at the second minute of the match.
The Champions League final was the first time Tottenham had a fully healthy squad for the first time during last season. They went into the match with some of their best tactics only to be dismantled within the first 24 seconds when the referee awarded a penalty following a controversial handball against Moussa Sissoko.
According to Pochettino, the defeat was one of his lowest moments throughout his whole career. In an interview with the Standard, he said, "It was very bad. I compare with summer 2002, when we drew with Sweden and were beaten by England in the group stage at the World Cup, within one week. As a player and as a manager both are the worst moments in my career."
Nevertheless, Pochettino is looking forward to the opportunities that the next season brings. He said that the start of the new season should be able to bring the needed positivity the squad needs in order to propel forward.
The Tottenham Hotspur is slated to participate in the Audi Cup in Germany next week. They are scheduled to face Real Madrid. After that, the club is set to face either Bayern Munich or Fenerbahce. As for the club's Premier League schedule, they are due to face Aston Villa in a home game scheduled on August 10, Saturday.
