On Tuesday, Samsung announced the unveiling of its first-ever mobile processor equipped with 5G connectivity. The Samsung Exynos 980 chip merges both 5G modem and mobile application processor into a single chip. But, what can this new mobile processor offer that others could not?

The Samsung Exynos 980 promises to considerably boost the coverage, speed, and responsiveness of wireless networks. It is capable of running between 10 and 100 times faster than the usual cellular connection available today. Interestingly, the new chip can offer much quicker connectivity compared to that offered by a physical fiber-optic cable.

Additionally, the Samsung Exynos 980 promises to increase the speed a device could connect to a network with speeds as fast as a millisecond to begin download or upload. The new 5G-integrated mobile processor from Samsung supports wireless networks ranging between 2G and 5G. It has a data transfer rate of 2.55 Gbps in 5G network for sub-6 GHz spectrum.

The Samsung Exynos 980 is based on 8nm construction and packs in four Cortex-A55 CPU cores and two Cortex-A77 CPU cores. Moreover, it houses a Mali-G76 graphics processing unit perfect for mixed-reality experiences and for gaming. The South Korean tech giant is also hyping the onboard neural processing unit of Samsung Exynos 980, which is designed to handle AI tasks.

According to Samsung, it is capable of performing 2.7 times faster than its predecessor. The new neural processing unit is anticipated to enhance intelligent camera features, content filtering, user authentication, and many more AI functions. Additionally, the new NPU of Samsung Exynos 980 is capable of providing increased data security and privacy while increasing its prowess in handling AI tasks.

The Samsung Exynos 980 also features an images signal processor that will surely please photographers and photography enthusiasts. It allows the device to process up to 108 million pixel images with support for up to a maximum of five image sensors. Moreover, the Samsung Exynos 980 multiformat codec backs decoding and encoding of 4K UHD video at 120 FPS.

It also comes with HDR10 Plus support with dynamic mapping while delivering more detailed and illuminant colors in the content of the video. In its press release statement, Samsung said that the introduction of 5G modem in 2018 was the driving force in the 5G revolution and paved a way into the next step in the field of mobility.

Samsung Electronics Vice President for System LSI Marketing Ben Hur said that with Samsung Exynos 980, the company is aiming to make 5G more accessible to a bigger range of users and continue to lead innovation in the mobile 5G industry. The mass production of Samsung Exynos 980 is anticipated to begin in the later part of 2019.
