Has BBC renewed Bodyguard season 2? Viewers might be clamoring for more of the thrilling drama, but star Richard Madden is certain of one thing about the show for now: production for the follow-up won't begin in 2019.

Madden told Deadline that, at the moment, he and creator Jed Mercurio have ongoing active discussions regarding Bodyguard season 2. Initially, they all signed on to the show believing it was a one-off deal but, since viewers loved it, the idea of a second season seemed more plausible.

But, the actor also said that they have to plan out the plot for Bodyguard season 2 carefully. Hence, there's no rush to begin filming, especially not this year.

"We're going to give it a breath and do it justice," Madden said. "If we come back to do another one, I want to do something as different as the first series was, and not just repeat the cycle, repeat the formula. I want to do something totally different, and I'm excited to see what Jed comes up with in that way."

As it is, BBC has not actually given Bodyguard season 2 the green light yet. Despite the British drama becoming a hit, even outside the U.K., the network has not yet officially signed the series to proceed with a second season.

But, if the show were to snap up a renewal, Mercurio may have lined up a potential plot for Bodyguard season 2. In an interview Radio Times, the scribe said that he has been thinking of an idea where Madden's David Budd could be protecting a royal family or some foreign dignitary.

Mercurio also said, in a separate interview with The Sun, that if he's making Bodyguard season 2, he must also be ready to set up the third and fourth season. Now, it's also likely going to be a different cast every time, except for Madden, but everything is still up for discussions.

Meanwhile, viewers may still watch or re-watch Bodyguard season 1 on Netflix. The show has six episodes and also stars Keeley Hawes, Sophie Rundle, Gina McKee, Vincent Franklin, Pippa Haywood, Paul Ready, and Tom Brooke.

Bodyguard peaked at 11 million viewers when it aired on BBC in the fall of 2018. Its viewership even grew when Netflix acquired the series for international release.
