Call the Midwife season 9 will mark another beginning by the time December 2019 rolls as its anticipated Christmas special will air on BBC. But, the festive mood will likely be dampened since a key character is rumored to die this season.
According to The Sun, executive producer Pippa Harris has given hints that the death of this character will leave the viewers in tears. Harris confirmed, however, that the character to meet her untimely end won't be Sister Mildred (played by Miriam Margolyes). Just the same, the executive producer won't name names except to warn fans that Call the Midwife season 9 will be a tear-jerker.
The cast and crew of Call the Midwife season 9 started filming the Christmas special back in the spring. Margolyes and her co-stars went on location at the Scottish Outer Hebrides to film some scenes before going home to their Poplar set in time for the holiday celebrations in the show's timeline.
According to Daily Express, the new season will open with a death scene, but it's not the one that Harris has been talking about. Instead, Call the Midwife season 9 will begin in 1965 with the funeral of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Creator Heidi Thomas, who has finished writing the scripts for Call the Midwife season 9, confirmed there would be death. However, to appease viewers, she named the ones who will still be alive by the end of the upcoming installment: Trixie Franklin (played by Helen George), Lucille Anderson (played by Leonie Elliott) and Valerie Dyer (played by Jennifer Kirby).
Call the Midwife season 9 will bring new challenges to reflect a changing world. Along with the population growth in East End comes new and old diseases that will haunt the hospital, Nonnatus, and its staff. The new season is expected to launch right after the Christmas special.
Meanwhile, Call the Midwife announced on social media that new episodes of its previous seasons are now ready for streaming on Netflix. Fans can now re-watch or catch up on this period drama from season 1 to season 7 before the latest installment begins its run.
Call the Midwife isn't going anywhere as well after the ninth season as BBC has renewed the show until 2022. There will also be Christmas specials in the between seasons.
