A major shake-up is coming to Chicago Med season 5, and it will be in the form of the new trauma doctor, Crockett Marcel (played by Dominic Rains). Viewers will be introduced to the character in the premiere episode, which will finally air on Wednesday, Sept. 25, on NBC.
For now, Crockett will be a recurring presence in Chicago Med season 5, but he is still going to disturb the hospital's status quo. In an interview with One Chicago Center, showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov revealed what viewers might expect from the new guy and the latest season.
Chicago Med season 5 will bring more focus on the Emergency Department as Crockett becomes an established character. But, he will be the complete opposite of the doctor played by Colin Donnell (as Dr. Connor Rhodes), who won't be returning this season.
"[Crockett] is a much more easygoing guy. He has a different perspective on things [and a] very different background," Frolov said. "He's from New Orleans; he has a sense of humor about things."
Schneider said that, since Crockett has experienced tragedy, there are qualities that viewers might not see from him as a doctor. Frolov said that Crockett would "disturb things a lot more."
Rains' casting was announced in Chicago Med season 5 just last August. According to Deadline, he's a "hard-partying doctor" who works as a badass at the trauma unit.
Meanwhile, the producers also shared with Entertainment Weekly that Chicago Med season 5 will have a season-long story arc for April (played by Yaya DaCosta) and Choi (played by Brian Tee). April's pregnancy was dropped like a bomb in the finale of Chicago Med season 4 last May.
Natalie (played by Torrey DeVitto), on the other hand, will be struggling with memory loss for a while due to the crash. The lingering thing she has been planning to tell Will (played by Nick Gehlfuss) before her accident will have to remain answered for a while.
"Despite Natalie's "engagement" to Phillip, Will will be unable to let her go," Frolov said. "This will form a tense triangle in season 5."
Chicago Med season 5 episode 1 is aptly titled "Never Going Back to Normal" as the hospital goes through many changes. The show will begin its run on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 8:00 p.m.
