Manchester United's plans of adding more depth to their midfield include the signing of Mathias Normann. According to reports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keeping a close eye on the Rostov midfielder.
The Red Devils have endured a dismal start to the 2019-20 campaign are looking to boost their squad in the upcoming January transfer window. Despite uncertainty over his future, Solskjaer has made clear his desire to strengthen his ranks and wants to prioritize the signing of a new midfielder.
While Mario Mandzukic and Christian Eriksen remain United's main transfer targets, the club is keen on expanding other options as well.
The Norwegian gaffer views Normann as a cheap option to shore up United's squad in light of the disappointing performances of Nemanja Matic and Fred. Both players have failed to fulfill their roles as Ander Herrera's replacement, who has left the club for Paris Saint-Germain.
23-year-old Normann has so far impressed football enthusiasts this season, having bagged last month's Premier League Player of the month. The Norwegian player also made his debut for the national team against Malta.
Solskjaer has seen first-hand Normann's talents, having managed his compatriot a few years ago in Molde after he was signed on loan from Brighton. The midfielder eventually made a move at Rostov after a challenging tenure at Brighton and has been on a roll since.
The versatile midfielder - who prefers a defensive role - has played in all but one of his team's matches so far this season, contributing a goal and three assists to his side's title push.
However, United aren't alone chasing Normann, as both Sevilla and Tottenham are also keen on signing the star, whose current valuation is at £15-20 million. Several other players have been reportedly shortlisted by the Red Devils as well, including Jadon Sancho, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Declan Rice.
The Old Trafford side is bent on strengthening their squad following a series of disappointing campaigns, despite already having new additions to the club the likes of Dan James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Harry Maguire. Solskjaer may well be desperate to bring in a new midfielder to replace Paul Pogba, who faces an uncertain future with the English club after revealing his intention to quit early on.
Manchester United are currently ranked 12th in the Premier League table, accumulating nine points from eight matches. After the international break, the club is set to meet long-time rivals Liverpool, a match that will perhaps determine Solskjaer's fate.
