Chinese billionaire and home appliance tycoon He Xiangjian was reportedly the victim of an attempted kidnapping over the weekend. Several men armed with explosives had reportedly broken into his home in Foshan on Sunday, holding the founder of Chinese appliance firm Midea captive.

According to local media reports, He's son had made a daring escape in the middle of the break-in and swam across a nearby river before contacting police. He was eventually rescued and police had apprehended five suspects involved in the attempted kidnapping. No one was reportedly harmed and He was successfully taken from his captors.

The incident had sparked a number of concerns from He's neighbors, most of which were shocked at how the perpetrators had managed to enter such as well-guarded areas. He's luxury residence is located in Royal Orchid International Golf Villa, one of the most luxurious residential estates in Foshan's Shunde district.

The villa has around 200 luxury mansions and detached homes along with several low-rise apartment buildings. The entire property was developed by He's own Midea Group more than 10 years ago and sports luxury amenities such as a sports center and an 18-hole golf course.

Property agents had pointed out that the villa had round-the-clock security and visitors were required to submit their identification cards before entering. Homeowners are also typically contacted when a visitor arrives at the gates of the villa, which has several checkpoints and security guards on patrol.

The five suspects that held He captive were arrested on Monday morning, almost 12 hours after He's son had made the call to report his father's kidnapping. He is worth an estimated $25 billion and is one of the country's richest men. His 400 square meter house is located at the very end of the project and close to the villa's golf course. He's home is about one kilometer away from Midea Group's Guangzhou headquarters.

Most of the people living at the Royal Orchid International Golf Villa are prominent businessmen from Guangzhou. According to property agents, only two houses in the property are on the market. One of the properties, a 190-square meter two-story house, is priced at around 6.5 million yuan or around $920,000.

Property agents expect that the incident may reduce the value of some of the homes in the villa. The Royal Orchid International Golf Villa is believed to be one of the safest neighborhoods in the area. Midea Group has yet to release a statement on their next course of action following their founder's attempted kidnapping.
