Canelo Alvarez is enjoying the freedom he has right now to face and fight whoever he deems worthy. He is set to test the mettle of Callum Smith on Saturday, someone who remains undefeated. But beyond that, most are eager to know the status of the trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin is.

Compared to Golovkin, Alvarez offered a more positive comment on seeing that third fight happen. Alvarez detailed how both sides were in deep talks before the pandemic struck. From the way he sounded in an interview with Boxingscene, the Mexican is pretty much interested and feels it is something that can be made official at any moment.

“Well, look, at the end of 2019 and at the beginning of 2020, we were in serious conversations,” Alvarez said. “We were talking about that [third] fight [against Golovkin]. And then the pandemic happened, and now we have other goals. But it’s a fight that can happen at any moment.”

It would be good to note that DAZN’s scheduling comes with some intent. Before Alvarez and Smith get it on, Golovkin will be going up against Kamil Szeremeta of Poland. GGG was also asked the same question but did not sound that hyped.

"I don't think about this because I'm tired of thinking about it," Golovkin said in another report from Boxingscene. "It's been over two years that we've been throwing this around. It's not my fault that this fight has not taken place.

Like Alvarez, Golovkin is more inclined to stay the course and take on fights offered to him. He is open to a third fight but is not letting that alter his focus.

"Right now I'm in my professional boxing career and I don't see the need for that myself. But in future if there is a demand and an interest, then why not?" Golovkin said.

The same holds with Alvarez. He has his own set of goals like winning all the titles in the 168-pound category. But before thinking ahead, he needs to win over Smith who is no pushover.

Assuming he does pull off a win over Smith, Alvarez could choose to target the IBF title next. However, this means that he would have to align with Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions for at least one pay-per-view on Fox or Showtime. Caleb Plant, someone who has been linked to the Mexican before, is set to face Caleb Truax in the main event set for Jan. 30.

If not that, there is the WBO belt to consider as well. He would have had that chance to face Billy Joe Saunders but plans just got nixed when the coronavirus complicated matters.
