The 2021 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble happens this weekend with several names already revealed as participating. But the latest one to declare was WWE Hall of Famer Edge, someone most had speculated to be returning.

The 47-year-old will mark his return to the wrestling scene months after suffering torn triceps. Edge was last seen at WWE Backlash when he faced Randy Orton. He announced on WWE Raw, revealing he will join the 30-man battle royal once more with Wrestlemania 37 in mind.

“One year ago. Feels like a decade, doesn’t it? Last year's story was once in a lifetime. No sense trying to recreate that. Impossible. I don’t have you there. This year my journey is different. I’m not just happy to be back. I want back what I never lost and it starts this Sunday,” Edge said.

While the return of the Rated-R Superstar would be a treat, it is a bit unusual considering the WWE normally keeps under wraps the surprise entrants to the Royal Rumble. However, this was the case under normal circumstances – particularly the part where there is a live audience in attendance.

The pandemic remains a threat and the 2021 WWE Royal Rumble will have to go on without fans watching it all go down live at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Jan. 31.

Rather than keep it a secret, the WWE opted to use big names like Edge to build up hype for the upcoming pay-per-view, Fightful Select reported. It is possible that other names have been held off and the WWE Hall of Famer was someone they determined would be okay to reveal.

Seeing that his rivalry with Orton seems far from settled, there is a chance that the two WWE stars may cross paths. It has been rumored that Edge and Orton could be one of the matches at Wrestlemania 37 so this could be the start of rekindling that feud.

Orton is now tied to a storyline with Alexa Bliss and “The Fiend” (Bray Wyatt). That could be settled soon and the former tag team partners could set the stage for an unsettled score.

Other than Edge, another former WWE star that could emerge is The Boogeyman. He responded to a WWE post on Twitter, hinting he could be part of the 30-man battle royal. Unlike Edge, however, he may just appear and take on a short role that may not go beyond the 2021 Royal Rumble.
