The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, was overcome with apprehension that she had been given a "death sentence" after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In June of last year, the royal woman, who is now 64 years old and was previously married to Prince Andrew and has two kids with him, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, made the decision to undergo a single mastectomy immediately after discovering that she had the disease, as per The Mirror.

After receiving the initial diagnosis, she revealed to The Sun newspaper how her thoughts began to spiral into "the darkest places" in her head.

"When you're told you have cancer, you can't help thinking it's a death sentence. Your mind goes to the darkest places and you wonder what lies ahead and how you are going to share the news with your family,” Sarah told The Sun.

"That was certainly the case for me last year when a routine mammogram detected breast cancer, something I had always dreaded,” the former wife of Prince Andrew went on.

Due to the frightening idea of flying into central London on a scorching summer day, the Duchess admitted that she almost skipped the critical appointment. She was considering postponing it instead so that she might avoid the discomfort of commuting.

The visit, which turned out to be a "life-saving" decision, was pressed upon by her sister Jane, who took the initiative. Fergie underscored the significance of the lesson she learned from her experience by saying, "I am living proof of the importance of never skipping screening appointments and always getting symptoms checked out promptly."

Fergie disclosed that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer earlier this year. Although she cautions against using the phrase "cancer-free," she is optimistic about her prognosis because her "treatment has been successful and tests show there has been no spread or recurrence" since her diagnosis.

"I'm reconciled to the fact that I will have to have checks for the rest of my life. I'm now determined to do whatever I can to raise awareness by sharing my experience,” Sarah stated.

Princess Eugenie's and Beatrice's mother also expressed gratitude to her family for their support; however, as reported by GB News, she did not mention her ex-husband.

Sarah said she was able to maintain a positive attitude and has been informed that her viewpoint is positive because of the love and support she received from her family, particularly from her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

She also referenced her sister by describing a significant moment. The duchess revealed she had almost missed the appointment because she couldn't bear the thought of traveling into central London on a hot summer day, so she decided to put it off.

It wasn't until Sarah mentioned this to her sister Jane, who had contacted her from her home in Australia, that she went into her bossy older sibling mode and insisted that she go. She had mentioned this by accident. It was that checkup and the treatment that she received that ultimately saved her life.
