The Huawei Mate 30 series was recently launched and boasted an interesting set of upgraded software and hardware. The bezel-free edge to edge screens and extra camera sensors are just some of the impressive features that Huawei Mate 30 series is proud of. However, the new series comes with a major trade-off that might disappoint consumers.
Over the years, Huawei has grown to be one of the reputable smartphone makers. It has invaded the market that was mostly dominated by Samsung and Apple. However, because of the recent trade war between the US and China as well as the blacklisting from the US Commerce Department, the Chinese smartphone maker was forced to use Android open-source on Huawei Mate 30 series.
This means that the Huawei Mate 30 series will not ship with the pre-installed customary Google Apps and Google services. In other words, the Huawei Mate 30 series will have no Google Play Store upon purchase. This restricts users to its in-house alternative store, which is the Huawei Mobile Services for apps library.
But, Huawei was able to somewhat come up with a workaround. Huawei Mate 30 series users can unlock the bootlocker. This was confirmed by Huawei to Android Police recently. Chief Executive Officer Richard Yu said that the company limited the bootloader unlocking because they wanted to ensure the security of the Huawei Mate 30 series users.
The CEO added that Huawei Mate 30 series users will have more freedom to do more customizations and the company is planning to let the consumers do more of that. While it may not sound like the ideal situation for the company or the customers, unlocking the Huawei Mate 30 series will provide an easier way to install Google apps and services. But, so far, it is not yet clear as to how this will work and up to what degree will Huawei provide its support for unlocking the bootloader.
Sideloading apps and unlocking bootloader of the Huawei Mate 30 series maybe over the technical abilities of the median user. So, it is not clear if this particular feature will affect the consumers and the sales of the latest devices. It can be recalled that the Chinese smartphone maker has earlier set an ambitious goal of selling 20 million units of Huawei Mate 30 series devices.
CCS Insight Research Chief Ben Wood recently told The Guardian that Huawei has already developed a strong brand in Europe and there will be a definite market for any new products considering the company's great record in terms of cutting-edge technology and slick design. However, the absence of Google apps and services on Huawei Mate 30 series may pose a huge challenge for customers.
