There is little doubt that The Witcher is one of the most anticipated shows of 2019. The upcoming fantasy series is not only based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski but is also expected to draw in fans of the video games by CD Projekt Red. Not surprisingly, Netflix appears to be feeling very confident about the ambitious new show starring Henry Cavill. The streaming giant has just renewed the series for a second season ahead of its premiere later this year.

According to Deadline, Netflix has renewed The Witcher for a second season which is expected to begin production in London by early 2020. The new season is expected to consist of eight new episodes which will premiere in 2021. The announcement comes just over a month before the premiere of The Witcher Season 1. This means that the streaming giant is already considering the first season to be a huge success even before it airs.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich expressed her excitement over the renewal. "I'm so thrilled that before fans have even seen our first season, we are able to confirm that we'll be returning to The Continent again to continue telling the stories of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri," she said in a statement.

There could be a good reason why Netflix is eager to renew The Witcher. After all, Andrzej Sapkowski's books offer several exciting possibilities for the series. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has previously confirmed that she has already mapped out at least seven seasons worth of stories. With that in mind, the show appears to be prepared for a truly long run in the near future.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter who prefers to work on his own. However, he is forced to work with a mysterious young princess who turns out to be more powerful than she seems. Working with an equally powerful sorceress, the trio must travel across the Continent to discover their own destiny.

The show will also star Freya Allen as Princess Ciri, the young princess with a dark secret, as well as Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, the sorceress who works with Geralt of Rivia. Both characters are expected to play a huge role in the series. In additon to that, the series is expected to adapt more of the books than the video games.

The first season of The Witcher will premiere on Netflix on December 20.
