Ivy League universities, namely Cornell, Columbia, and Brown, reportedly received bomb threats on Sunday, prompting officials to immediately evacuate buildings and warn students and staff to stay away from the campuses.
The three Ivy League colleges all issued emergency alerts to students and staff. They also evacuated people out of their main buildings as a precaution. In Ithaca, New York, police closed off the center of the campus. They reportedly received information that several bombs were placed inside four buildings within the Cornell campus.
Columbia University also imposed similar measures after they received similar bomb threats. The university issued a campus-wide emergency alert after it received reports that bombs were planted at several of its buildings.
Students at both universities were told to stay away from the school's buildings until further notice. Some students reportedly heard rumors that there was an active shooting incident at their schools, but the reports were later proven to be false.
"Today's bomb threats were deemed not credible by the NYPD, and the campus buildings have been cleared for re-occupancy," Columbia University officials said.
Cornell lifted its bomb threat warning Sunday evening, stating that police have concluded that there was no immediate threat to the school. Officials said it is now safe to resume all normal activities. Columbia also issued a similar statement, telling students and staff that the NYPD had not found any credible evidence that the threat existed.
Brown University administrators in Providence, Rhode Island, sent a text warning to students saying that police were looking into several buildings on campus concerning a bomb threat. Officials latest said the threats were found to be false.
The bomb threats Sunday came just days after similar threats were issued to several other universities across the country. On Friday, a non-emergency communications line in New Haven, Connecticut, received a call warning police that bombs were planted around the Yale campus.
Ohio University got a similar threat on Saturday. Police eventually found the bomb threats to be bogus and not credible. On the same day, another threat was received by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The local police department later announced that the threats were unsubstantiated.
